《Farm Life Joy》- Qinghua Community Development Association

In earlier times, Xinwu was a very remote and underdeveloped rural area. During the agricultural period of the 1940s/50s, every household made their living from farming, with fields in front and behind their homes. They raised chickens, ducks, geese, cattle, sheep, and pigs, and grew various fruit trees and rice. They were self-sufficient for meals and festival rice cakes, living simple, frugal, and modest lives in a village rich with human warmth. Today's rural village still maintains this warmth, with a happy life amid nature - birds singing among flowers, cicadas and frogs calling, the fragrance of rice fields, and the natural symphony around homes where rice and fruit trees are cultivated in carefree living. Through this theme's presentation, modern people can understand how early farmers worked from sunrise to sunset, the day-to-day agricultural life of continuous hard work in the fields, and their emphasis on environmental and water resource protection - aspects that modern people should protect and preserve to sustain Taoyuan's beautiful mountains and waters for future generations.

    • 《Flying Squirrel Explorer》
      《Flying Squirrel Explorer》

      《Flying Squirrel Explorer》

In essential Atayal hunting practices, flying squirrels are common prey. Hunting not only trains hunters' reflexes but also demonstrates indigenous group discipline.

It carries meaning in governing hunters' spirits and behavior while holding significance for cultural inheritance.

Catching flying squirrels is no simple task - hunters must understand their characteristics and habits, including seasons, timing, food sources, and pathways, while being able to track them and set traps.

Successful hunting requires wisdom, careful observation, and humble learning from the forest.

This lantern installation draws inspiration from the flying squirrel's agility and freedom, incorporating elements of night sky and forest to show its graceful gliding under moonlight, conveying the joy of natural exploration while symbolizing growth through environmental challenges and gratitude toward nature.

    • 《Joy of Harvest》
      《Joy of Harvest》

      《Joy of Harvest》

Atayal cuisine comes from naturally abundant crops, with millet and sweet potatoes as common staples. Makino bamboo is also crucial to Atayal culture, serving not only as a primary building material but also providing bamboo shoots and bamboo-tube rice as distinctive delicacies.

The lantern recreates harvest scenes, symbolizing indigenous people's appreciation and gratitude for the land.

Colorful crop imagery expresses the joy of abundant harvest,  representing achievements through hard work and collective strength while reminding us to cherish the land's bounty and feel our connections during shared moments of harvest.

      《Legacy of the Diamond Pattern》

The lives of Atayal women are inseparably intertwined with weaving.

Creating textiles and clothing is their innate calling and skill, from growing ramie plants for fiber to spinning thread, dyeing, and weaving - showcasing Atayal women's ingenuity while carrying the crucial responsibility of preserving tribal and family weaving patterns.

The diamond patterns and horizontal stripes are signature Atayal motifs: horizontal lines represent the path to the rainbow bridge, while the varied diamond patterns symbolize the Eyes of the Ancestors - the watchful gaze of ancestors over their people, representing both protection and guidance. The lantern area features these diamond pattern totems, revealing the deep history and wisdom of indigenous culture. The lantern design depicts indigenous women sitting on the ground, creating clothing using traditional weaving techniques, showcasing tribal craftsmanship and creativity.  Each diamond shape pays respect to the ancestors, carrying stories and memories, aiming to promote cultural inheritance and help more people understand this precious heritage while keeping it vibrant in modern times.

    • 《Giving and Harvesting》
      《Giving and Harvesting》

      《Giving and Harvesting》

Traditionally, the Atayal agricultural year began with slash-and-burn farming in the mountains. This process started with clearing vegetation - uprooting weeds and vines, cutting trees while preserving larger ones, and cutting smaller branches into sections.  After 50 days of sun exposure to dry the vegetation, burning would begin. Two to three days before burning, neighbors would help create firebreaks around the new ground to prevent forest fires, with young villagers standing guard. Several days after burning, once the ashes had cooled, field preparation could begin. This labor-intensive process typically yielded two harvests per year, with farmers moving to new land after two years when soil fertility declined. Modern times have seen a shift from traditional slash-and-burn agriculture to high-value crops like peaches, mushrooms, and tea. This area's unique geography and persistent fog create ideal conditions for growing peaches that are juicy, fragrant, tender, and melt in your mouth. These high-quality peaches have made Lalashan Peaches famous nationwide. This lantern design emphasizes the relationship between effort and reward, encouraging everyone to cherish each opportunity to work hard, knowing that dedication yields sweet results.

Each watershed houses different tribes, nurturing distinct cultural histories while maintaining Atayal heritage and tribal memories. The lantern area features flowing water imagery, with lights moving like the gentle Dahan River current, reflecting clear waters that symbolize life's continuity and hope. The design uses shimmering lights to convey the vitality and energy of clear waters, expressing optimism for the future as we welcome tomorrow's brilliance together.

    • 《Dance and Music Revival》
      《Dance and Music Revival》

      《Dance and Music Revival》

Traditional Atayal music and dance mirror tribal life, expressing everything from ceremonies and harvests to weddings and daily work through song and movement.  For the Atayal people, music and dance are essential parts of life. Atayal songs typically draw inspiration from daily activities like weaving and harvesting, featuring gentle melodies and simple dance steps that flow with the singing. Traditional Atayal performances fall into two categories: ceremonial dances and everyday social dances.  Ceremonial dances are more formal and solemn, performed as a tribal community.  Social dances are more casual, often performed by just three or four people together. This lantern installation celebrates indigenous traditional dance and music, with designs inspired by dancers' movements. The flowing lights help viewers feel the rhythm of the music and beauty of the dance. Through this display, we invite everyone to experience the charm of indigenous performing arts and help preserve and promote the cultural essence of indigenous peoples.
