Pingtung’s Qixingyan consists of islands on seven coral reefs shaped like the Big Dipper, and named after it. This is Taiwan’s southernmost island group. The rich ecology and warm water make it a favored diving spot. Schools of migratory jack fish are common here. King tuna and hammerhead sharks are also often seen. For those who like diving, each visit is like opening a surprise package!

    • 《Precious Island: The Three Northern Islands》- JOHAN CHENG
《Precious Island: The Three Northern Islands》- JOHAN CHENG

《Precious Island: The Three Northern Islands》- JOHAN CHENG

The Three Northern Islands (Pengjia Island, Mianhua Island, and Huaping Island) were all formed by volcanism. Mianhua Island was inhabited during the Qing Dynasty. In 1886, Canadian missionary George Mackay went to the island and recorded the activities of many birds. During the Japanese occupation, boat travel between Mianhua Island and Keelung was common. After the Kuomintang arrived in Taiwan, the residents were removed from Mianhua and the island was declared a military zone. With this status, wildlife populations grew. The island is home to many special species of animals, such as the Human-faced Spider,
White-bellied Booby, and skinks. The eggs of Lead Mountain Geckos make this a paradise for seabirds. Mianhua and Pengjia Islands are home to the protected bird species Brown Noddy and the Bridled Tern. In 2009, staff from the Keelung Wild Bird Society discovered that Peregrine Falcons were breeding on Mianhua Island.

    • 《Precious Island: Jibei Island》- JOHAN CHENG
《Precious Island: Jibei Island》- JOHAN CHENG

《Precious Island: Jibei Island》- JOHAN CHENG

Penghu’s Jibei Island has a flat terrain and vast arable land. Early residents farmed and fished. Dry conditions on the island are suitable for the growth of cacti and chrysanthemums. The island is also a paradise for seabirds, in particular the Brown Noddy and Bridled Terns. Shellfish are abundant in the intertidal zone, such as the Black Butterfly Oyster. The diverse ecology highlights the unique natural landscape of Jibei Island. The island is also home to stone weirs, a traditional form of fishing that utilizes tides.

    • 《Precious Island: Wuqiu》- JOHAN CHENG
      《Precious Island: Wuqiu》- JOHAN CHENG

      《Precious Island: Wuqiu》- JOHAN CHENG

Wuqiu Township is part of Kinmen County. It is home to abundant fisheries. Residents say that Wuqiu has three treasures: “lobster, yellow croaker and seaweed." During its fishing heyday, five or six large fishing boats were active, and the villagers sold their bounty of seafood in Penghu. The islands’ residents rely mostly on the sea for their livelihood. They also harvest snails at low tide, and then go to their regular jobs during the rest of the day. Thus, their work and rest are tied to the timing of the tides. In addition to a feast of conch meat on the dining table, the shells are used for other purposes and are often seen in buildings. This lets people see at a glance how the island and the ocean are interdependent.

    • 《Precious Island, Keelung Island》- JOHAN CHENG
《Precious Island, Keelung Island》- JOHAN CHENG

《Precious Island, Keelung Island》- JOHAN CHENG

With a combination of a rainy environment and precious volcanic terrain from the weathering of rocks, Keelung Island has rich vegetation. Many plants, such as cabbage and pine, grow on the island. It is also home to unique species of turtles, crabs and other animals. The coconut crab is a protected species, and birds such as the Eurasian Hoopoe and Light-vented Bulbul are sometimes observed. However, no large wild mammals live on the island. In the past, the island was closed to the public for military control. In 2001, it was opened to sightseeing. Boats to the island depart from the Bisha Fishing Port and a dock near the Keelung Railway Station. Keelung Island #8 is the only building on the island with a house number!

    • 《Precious Island: Green Island》- JOHAN CHENG
《Precious Island: Green Island》- JOHAN CHENG

《Precious Island: Green Island》- JOHAN CHENG

Green Island is a natural ecological classroom. Taiwan’s unique sika deer was once on the verge of extinction here. However, the species has recovered thanks to restoration efforts. This precious ecological resource adds charm to the island. A protected insect on the island, the Tsuda's Giant Stick Insect, is only found on Green Island and in Kenting. The insect blends in well with the greenery. During the Land Crab breeding season, from June to September, one can see mother crabs carrying their eggs as they try to avoid cars on the road. At night, the intertidal zone is home to mudskippers of different sizes. Their mucus makes them hard to catch. They are easier to catch from the front than from behind!

    • 《Precious Island, Guishan Island》- JOHAN CHENG
《Precious Island, Guishan Island》- JOHAN CHENG

《Precious Island, Guishan Island》- JOHAN CHENG

Guishan Island is shaped like a floating turtle. Written records show the island was inhabited during the Qing Dynasty, with the population reaching 700 people. The residents mainly lived by fishing, and homemade fishing nets were a common sight. The island is home to “eight famous scenic spots,” including the Guishan Sunrise, cave stalactites, and underwater hot springs. When you step onto the island and look around the lake, you may also see many types of butterflies, as well as squirrels and shell ginger.

      《Xiaoliuqiu Turtle Symphony》- Paqeriras •Kazangiljan

Traditional techniques such as rattan weaving were used to create sea turtles swimming leisurely in the water in this form of abstract art. The main element is a giant sea turtle made of metal and glass. Internal lights reflecting on the image of the ocean give an image of a turtle coasting through the sea. Tree bark and wool simulate reefs of coral, which fluctuate with changes in ambient sounds (such as those of visitors and the wind). When visitors enter the display, it is as if they are walking within the clear ocean in summer.

Situated both in Central America and the Caribbean regions, Belize is an important ally of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Over the past 36 years of diplomatic relations, the two nations have maintained cooperation in various fields, including trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges.

This year’s Belize lantern design features the Baron Bliss Lighthouse as its main theme. Located near the port area of Belize City, the lighthouse is a significant landmark in the region. Its construction was funded by a generous donation from British philanthropist, Baron Victor Bliss, commemorating his contributions to Belize. In front of the lighthouse stands a monument honoring Baron Bliss. Every year on March 9th, Belize celebrates National Heroes and Benefactors Day and recognizes Baron Bliss’s contributions to the nation.

Additionally, near the lighthouse stands a statue commemorating Isaiah Emmanuel Morter, Belize’s first Black millionaire. Morter amassed his wealth through banana and coconut farming, and his story continues to inspire many today.

Between the lighthouse and Morter’s statue, colorful "BELIZE" letters vividly embodies the nation's vibrancy.

Nearby, an electric bus leisurely passes by, featuring an image of the world’s largest underwater sinkhole, the Great Blue Hole. This depiction of the electric bus bridges Belize’s past with its present.

We can experience Belize's unique charm through this lantern and better understand its rich history and cultures!
